Sunday, June 27, 2021 - 09:20
In this exhibition, which will last until September 12, visitors will be able to enjoy an important selection of works by the artists, as well as conferences, screenings, book presentations, etc.

The mayor of Chiclana, José María Román; the delegate of Culture, Susana Rivas; and the relatives of Costus, Ricardo Carrero and Beatriz Naya, have inaugurated the exhibition ‘Costus in Chiclana’, which will be open to the public until September 12 at the Museum of Chiclana. A wide and in-depth sample of Costus's work, where, in addition to great works by this duo (both jointly and individually), during the duration of this exhibition (which includes other pieces, apart from paintings) the public can approach to these great creators forever associated with the best of the ‘Movida Madrileña’ through conferences, screenings, book presentations, etc.

During the ceremony, the mayor pointed out that ‘to inaugurate and be able to visit this exhibition in Chiclana is an act of generosity on the part of the family. We are happy and proud to have these works in the city, because Costus was of great importance as an icon of the Madrid scene in the 80s ‘. In addition, it has influenced the ‘effort made so that we have this beautiful exhibition here, for which I can only thank you on behalf of the city.’

For his part, Ricardo Carrero has commented that ‘we are going to be able to enjoy an exhibition with works that the families have given and in which we can contemplate all their creative stages, but also photos, sketches, posters, press clippings, etc. . ‘. "Thank the photographer Paco Navarro for the selfless assignment of three photos of Juan and Enrique, as well as Javier Astudillo for his contribution of three snapshots of Robert Mapplethorpe," he said.

“When Enrique and Juan finished painting the decoration of 'La Vía Láctea' in Madrid, they began a new stage as an artistic couple, making a series of works on Marín's dolls, which they called 'Las Marinas’, Ricardo Carrero recalled, who has stressed that ‘the relationship between Costus and Chiclana comes from ancient times and was extensive and fruitful in the artistic aspect. For this reason, at the moment we are closing a circle and fulfilling an inescapable destiny with this exhibition’.

Finally, he highlighted that ‘the first series that Enrique painted with Juan, 'Las Marinas', has its history in Enrique's visit at the age of 11 or 12 to Chiclana on the occasion of the 1965 flood and the image of floating dolls in the factory’. ‘That image created a very strong feeling for him and that's why it was the first series with Juan. All of this made Chiclana always be very close to Enrique’, she has expressed.

In addition, Beatriz Naya thanked the Chiclana Museum and all its staff for the work done to show Costus's work in Chiclana.
