Scripta Manent. An approach to the history of the book', new temporary exhibition of the Museum.

Thursday, March 23, 2023 - 12:12
The Museum of Chiclana hosts the exhibition 'Scripta Manent. An approach to the history of the book' until June 18. An exhibition that has opened the municipal delegate of Culture, Susana Rivas, and the director of the Museum, Jesus Romero.
During the opening ceremony, Susana Rivas stressed that, "coinciding with the date of today March 23, in the absence of a month to commemorate the Day of the Book, today we come to present this exhibition on the history of the book, as well as writing, paper, and those tools needed to write stories." "In addition to the sample itself, we want to give a didactic approach so that students and the educational community can enjoy this story," said the delegate of Culture, who has invited the public "to enjoy this exhibition so carefully and well organized by colleagues from the Museum".
For his part, Jesus Romero has indicated that "the important thing is the story of the history of writing and the book." "It is an exhibition with a strong didactic character, because the public changes and we want everyone to participate," he said.
It should be emphasized that human beings are aware of their limitations, a knowledge that does not necessarily force them to resignation. Often it is precisely the knowledge of being limited that leads him to glimpse possibilities and face challenges. It is not surprising that some have defined human beings as prosthetic animals that seek, thanks to their prostheses, to overcome obstacles that their own nature opposes to them, to overcome difficulties. Thus arose the history of the book. And so did the history of writing.
From the awareness of the limitation of memory and its fragility, at a given moment, specific human beings considered how to make these words that, tied to the air, take flight and drag the wind towards oblivion, endure within their oral tradition.
This approach to the History of the Book, now offered by the Museum, deals with that awareness, that challenge and certain consequent achievements, and is linked to a previous exhibition, held years ago, which was of special interest to the local student public, not only because of its subject matter, but also because of the didactic dimension of its approach.
The invention of writing, the supports, the tools of writing, the presentation of texts in the form of scrolls, accordion, codex, etc.; the printing press, the important role that the humble paper plays in all this, the illustration from the miniated codices to the illumination of printed books, the art of bookbinding or bibliophily are protagonists in this exhibition.
An interesting exhibition, with originals dating back several centuries and quality facsimile reproductions, and numerous complementary pieces, which brings the public closer to this exciting adventure, one of the greatest undertaken by mankind.
