This exhibition, which will be open to the public until January 4, presents a series of Christmas prints, which reproduce paintings by artists such as Ghirlandaio, Perugino, Juan de Juanes, Bernardino Luini, Rafael Sanzio, Andrea del Sarto, Guercino, Veázquez, Murillo, Carlo Dolci and Carlo Maratti, among others.
The municipal delegate of Culture, Susana Rivas, and the director of the Museum of Chiclana, Jesús Romero, have inaugurated the exhibition 'Other Christmas prints. Christmas in Printmaking', which will be available to the public until next January 4 at the Museum of Chiclana. This exhibition presents Christmas-themed prints and many of them reproduce well-known paintings by famous painters such as Ghirlandaio, Perugino, Juan de Juanes, Bernardino Luini, Rafael Sanzio, Andrea del Sarto, Guercino, Veázquez, Murillo, Carlo Dolci or Carlo Maratti, among others.
Also noteworthy are the engravers who translated those works into dots, lines, wefts or works entirely their own. The excellence of some such as Blas Ametter or Massard, who in the 18th century participated in some of the best artistic enterprises linked to engraving that took place on the horizon of the Enlightenment, stands out here. Or the exquisite beauty of the clean lines of engravers such as, among our own, Pi y Margall.
A journey through original engravings from the 17th to the 21st centuries, with a predominance of 18th and 19th century engravings, which is, in turn, a journey through the stories of the infancy of Jesus, the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Adoration of the Magi, etc. Stories that marked the iconography of many masterpieces of Western art.
Along with the engravings that are exhibited around the perimeter of the room, some of them are also shown as inserts in books of engravings or illustrated with them. It is important not to forget how closely the printed book and the engraving went hand in hand in their evolution.
Susana Rivas has pointed out that this exhibition once again contextualizes the time of year we are approaching. “Although the greeting card is being lost over time, this exhibition reflects the great work that was done so many years ago,” she said, highlighting the quality of the authors. In addition, he invited the public to see Christmas from the point of view of engraving.
Jesús Romero explained that engraving covers a lot and “was used as a great tool to disseminate the work of the great masters. In this case, they were used to bring to many people the paintings that were only available to a few”.
