The mayor welcomed the artist’s granddaughter and accepted the works—two oil portraits painted by the Chiclana-born artist—which will be added to the museum’s permanent collection
The Chiclana Museum will feature two new works by Eduardo Vassallo Dorronzoro. Both works, donated by the family of the Chiclana-born artist, were accepted by the city’s mayor, José María Román, at a ceremony attended by the municipal delegate for Culture, Susana Rivas; the museum’s director, Jesús Romero; and the artist’s granddaughter, Amparo Vassallo Rubio.
This new donation, which significantly enriches the Museum’s collection, consists of two works by Eduardo Vassallo Dorronzoro, a 19th-century painter from Chiclana (the earliest of our trio of prominent 19th-century painters: Vassallo, Gessa, and González).
These are two oil paintings—more specifically, two portraits—created by the Chiclana-based artist, of whom the Museum currently holds only one work—a portrait that was also recently donated—which is why this new donation is of particular interest, as it will significantly increase Vassallo’s presence at the Chiclana Museum.
“I would like to thank Doña Amparo, her husband, and her children for their generosity toward Chiclana,” said the mayor, who added, “We are very pleased that we now have three paintings by Eduardo Vassallo at the Chiclana Museum.”
For her part, Amparo Vassallo emphasized that “my intention has always been for both my father’s and my grandfather’s works to be in museums so that people can see them.” “In addition, my siblings and I have several of our grandfather’s paintings that we could temporarily lend to the Chiclana Museum for an exhibition,” she commented.
Finally, Jesús Romero noted that “until a year ago, we didn’t have a single painting by Vassallo in the museum, and now we have three works.” “Furthermore, thanks to donations like today’s, we can continue to expand the permanent collection, which is something to be commended,” he said.
The donation was generously made by Amparo Vassallo Rubio with the sole aim of enriching the Chiclana Museum’s collection and increasing the visibility of the work of Chiclana-born painter Eduardo Vassallo. These two works by Vassallo—which do not come from the family collection but were originally acquired in Madrid—join the other portrait painted by Vassallo and donated some time ago by José María Esteban and Montserrat V. Riba García de Villegas.
