Modern Age

  • Detalle de la sala: Edad Moderna

Chiclana was not only an agricultural producer on its way to becoming a market, but also an area for leisure. It turned into the preferred area of the affluent classes of Cádiz, who gradually began to build second residences here, or came to rest and enjoy their free time. It was not tourism as we know it today but it was a precursor.

The presence in Chiclana of this moneyed class has left lasting and notable traces. Examples are some of our best civil and religious buildings, the result of initiatives by members of this class or their economic contributions. These buildings –especially those from the 18th century- still form the skyline and identity of our city, especially the Torre del Arquillo del Reloj (the clock tower), the Palacetes del Conde del Pinar and del Conde de la Torre (the two small palaces of the Count of the Pinar and the Count of the Torre) and the churches of San Sebastián and San Juan Bautista.

Chiclana’s rural and urban expansion throughout the 18th century not only came to a halt but lost huge ground with the French Occupation at the dawn of the Contemporary era.
